Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

You may be wondering if the symptoms you have been experiencing are symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder - OCD. Here is a quick self-test you can take to learn more about the symptoms and whether or not you might have OCD.

People with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) suffer intensely from recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) or rituals (compulsions), which they feel they cannot control. Rituals such as hand washing, counting, checking, or cleaning are often performed in hope of preventing obsessive thoughts or making them go away. Performing these rituals, however, provides only temporary relief, and not performing them markedly increases anxiety. Left untreated, obsessions and the need to perform rituals can take over a person’s life. obsessive compulsive disorder is often a chronic, relapsing illness.

The symptoms we include in the OCD questionnaire are based on the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition or DSM-IV. This is the manual that mental health providers use to determine whether or not their patients have a particular disorder. We have also included questions based on The National Institute of Mental Health's Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder booklet.
